Am 12. März begann in Oman der Ramadan… einen Tag
nach den anderen arabischen Ländern. Niemand weiss genau weshalb, denn
eigentlich geht der islamische Kalender nach dem Mond - die einzige Antwort die
ich kriegte war: Oman hat schon immer seine eigenen Regeln gehabt…
Ramadan began in Oman on March 12th… one day after the other Arab countries. Nobody knows exactly why, because actually the Islamic calendar follows the moon - the only answer I got was: Oman has always had its own rules...

Ich finde es ein grosses Theater wie die
Weihnachten – alle machen mit und niemand weiss weshalb! Salalah war tagsüber
wie ausgestorben und auch abends kam kaum jemand an den Strand. Sonst lieben es
die Omani den Abend mit der ganzen Sippschaft am Strand zu verbringen… Nun machten
sie die Nacht zum Tag: Alle sind nachts wach und essen, tagsüber schlafen und
fasten sie – für mich hat das nichts mehr mit Fasten zu tun! Alle Restaurants
und Cafés sind geschlossen und öffnen erst am Abend, Geschäfte (wie auch für
Lebensmittel) sind normal geöffnet.
I find it a big theatre like Christmas - everyone takes part and nobody knows why! Salalah was deserted during the day and hardly anyone came to the beach in the evening. The Omani usually love to spend the evening with the whole family on the beach... Now they turned night into day: Everyone is awake at night and eats, during the day they sleep and fast - for me that has nothing to do with fasting anymore! All restaurants and cafes are closed and only open in the evening, shops (including those selling groceries) are open normally.

Ich trinke sehr selten Alkohol, aber jetzt im
Ramadan hatte ich Lust auf einen Gin und Tonic… vielleicht ein innerer Drang auszuprobieren
ob es möglich ist? – Auf jeden Fall spazierte ich zum Crowne Plaza, wo ich diesen
Monat schon mal einen genossen hatte… aber die Restaurants dort öffneten während
des Ramadans erst um 19 Uhr und Alkohol wurde für 1 Monat nicht verkauft – in ganz
Oman sei das so, erklärte mir die Serviceangestellte! Nebenan war das Anantara
Al Baleed (https://www.anantara.com/en/al-baleed-salalah), dessen Pool ich schon mal zum Schwimmen
benutzt hatte, weil die Wellen im Meer zu hoch waren. Ich spazierte weiter dorthin
und erkundigte mich in dessen Restaurant ob ich einen Gin und Tonic trinken
könne – und tatsächlich: Hier waren die Regeln ganz anders: Ab 19 Uhr gab es im
Restaurant Alkohol und sonst gab es noch eine kleine versteckte Bar, die vorher
Alkohol servierte… also ab in die Dakar Jazz Lounge für einen Gin und Tonic! :
)
I very rarely drink alcohol, but now in Ramadan I felt like having a gin and tonic... maybe an inner urge to try out whether it's possible? – In any case, I walked to the Crowne Plaza, where I had already enjoyed one this month… but the restaurants there only opened at 7 pm during Ramadan and alcohol was not sold for a month – this was the case throughout Oman, a waitress explained to me! Next door was the Anantara Al Baleed (https://www.anantara.com/en/al-baleed-salalah), whose pool I had already used for swimming because the waves in the sea were too high. I continued walking and asked in their restaurant whether I could have a gin and tonic - and indeed: Here the rules were completely different: From 7 pm alcohol was served in the restaurant and there was also a small hidden bar where l you can have alcohol before… so off to the Dakar Jazz Lounge for a gin and tonic! : )

Zum Abschluss meines 1-monatigen Aufenthaltes in
Salalah fuhr ich nochmals ins Wadi Darbat. Wieder legte ich mich unter einen
Baum für ein Nickerchen und kletterte rauf zu den Becken um ein erfrischendes
Bad im natürlichen Jacuzzi zu nehmen! : ) Diesmal war es eine ganz andere
Atmosphäre mit bedecktem Himmel und dem geschlossenen Darbat Café…

At the end of my 1-month stay in Salalah, I drove up to Wadi Darbat once again. Again I lay down under a
tree for a nap and climbed up to the pools to take a refreshing dip in the
natural jacuzzi! : ) This time it was a completely different atmosphere with
overcast skies and the closed Darbat Café...
